Worship

Worship is at the heart of the Christian community. We strive to offer humble hospitality to all who come, meeting you where ever you are on your faith journey. We hope that you will find the experience of worship to be a safe and sacred space, for all are welcome in God's house.

We have communion about once a month, and all are invited to share in this joyful feast of the people of God.

Our worship includes a vital multi-generational lay leadership and strong music ministry that reflect the diversity of our congregation.  From Bach to African choruses, from youth liturgists to founding members offering communion, our worship is an intersection of all who gather in this place.

We have a professionally staffed nursery for children 5 and under during the worship service

Education

As Presbyterians, we have an historical commitment to a critical engagement with the Bible in light of our current context. We believe that God created us as rational beings, and that we grow in our faith when we are willing to question and explore the depths of holy scripture.

We have a strong Christian Education program for 1st graders through adults.  All classes meet at 9:30AM on Sunday mornings from September through May.

Outreach

The best proof of faith is not what people say, but what they do.  We believe that to be true here at Oaklands.  We ask ourselves questions like, "What makes me come alive?"  and "What breaks my heart?" trusting that the answers to these questions are hints about where God is inviting us to be active in our world.

As a congregation, we recognize our calling to be engaged in service to our community including our onsite food pantry, our church garden that provides fresh seasonal vegetables to our pantry, and an onsite transitional shelter for a family from the community.  We also participate in outreach to the community through an annual Walk for the Homeless, a backpack/school supplies drive to support our partnership with Oaklands Elementary School, and a Salvation Army Toy Drive at Christmas.

Oaklands is a long-time supporter of Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services (LARS), which serves the Greater Laurel area by assisting homeless and low-income individuals and families experiencing crisis with emergency and long-term services designed to promote self-sufficiency.

We also support national and international disaster relief through the Presbyterian Church USA.

Pastor's Welcome

Pastor's Welcome

Welcome to Oaklands Presbyterian Church!  I am glad that you are taking the time to check us out.  I joined the Oaklands' community as their pastor in January 2013, and from the moment my family and I set foot in this place, we have had a feeling of “coming home."

While no church would say that they are “unwelcoming,” the people of Oaklands truly model hospitality in astounding ways.  Our worship services and leadership span nationalities, ages, sexual orientation, political parties, socio-economic status, gender, you name it!  And while we don’t agree on everything, we are unified through our profession of faith in the Triune God.

As Christians, we have so many rules, shoulds, and should nots.  But to me, discipleship boils down to two simple things: loving God and loving neighbor.  If everything we did was motivated by such deep and abiding love, we would surely change the world!

So please, come worship with us.  Join your voice to our praise, and your labor to our mission.
